Edmonton police closed a section of a south side avenue late Monday morning, after a man was struck by an LRT train.
Police said an 82-year-old man was hit by the train at about 11:15 a.m. Monday, on the LRT tracks near 57 Avenue and 111 Street.
An officer on the scene told CTV News the man was walking westbound across the street when he was hit by the southbound train.
An Edmonton Transit spokesperson told CTV News the operator of the train engaged the emergency brake right away.
“Fortunately the train had slowed quite a bit before it struck him,” EPS Inspector Chad Tawfik said.
“He was basically underneath the front of the train, and was pushed a short distance.”
Immediately after the crash, witnesses helped the man as they waited for emergency crews to arrive.
Paramedics treated the man on the scene, and he was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.
Police are looking into why the man crossed the tracks – witnesses said all warning signs, lights and alarms were working at the time.
“We’re going to be looking at video evidence and other information, just to confirm all of that,” Tawfik said.
