Edmonton police said a pregnant woman with weeks before her due date was struck and injured by a vehicle on Thursday night, but while both mother and baby suffered serious injuries, they were in stable condition Friday afternoon.

Police said the 25-year-old woman, who was 36 weeks pregnant at the time, was hit by an SUV on Kingsway Avenue and 114 Street at about 6 p.m. Thursday. The pedestrian was crossing the eastbound lanes of Kingsway Avenue southbound when she was struck.

When police arrived on the scene, officers found the pedestrian lying in the eastbound lanes of Kingsway.

She suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries, but she had to have an emergency caesarian section among other surgeries in hospital. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl, and both remained in hospital Friday.

Police are investigating, and said as of Friday afternoon, charges are not pending against the 57-year-old female driver of the SUV.

Speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors in the crash. The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit is investigating.
