Since the beginning of December, RCMP officers in the capital region have been targeting impaired drivers – and over the weekend, the number of drivers caught behind the wheel while impaired continued to grow.
RCMP west of Edmonton said four drivers were arrested for impaired driving offences in the capital region.
The four arrests bring the total for December to 19 drivers.
In addition, RCMP also stopped and charged a driver for speeding, after they were clocked on radar driving at 183 km/h, in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 16A.
Meanwhile, east of Edmonton, officers arrested 7 people for impaired driving – four of those were also arrested on outstanding warrants, while two were arrested for possession of a controlled substance, and one stolen vehicle was recovered.
So far this month, that RCMP unit has arrested 35 individuals for impaired driving-related offences in the Strathcona County area.
Police are reminding drivers to not drink and drive – and concentrated efforts by officers to catch impaired drivers will continue through December, and into the New Year.
