A record number of abandoned vehicles are living at Edmonton’s International Airport.

Authorities say more than 130 vehicles have been abandoned in the parking lot, some of them for as long as three years.

The problem is not new but there are more vehicles than usual.

Heather Hamilton with the EIA speculates that Alberta’s economy is partly to blame for vehicles being left at the airport.

“They’re based out of Ontario, out of Newfoundland or sometimes Ireland. They were working in Northern Alberta and it can be hard to figure out what to do with it,” said Hamilton. “That happens very commonly.”

The abandoned vehicles account for about one per cent of the 13,000 parking stalls.
