A spokesperson with Suncor has confirmed to CTV News that one person has died following an incident on a worksite north of Fort McMurray.
CTV News has learned one person had died following the incident at the Suncor Industrial site, the spokesperson confirmed the individual was a contractor at the oilsands base plant site, located 25 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.
RCMP said officers were called to the worksite at about 9:40 a.m. Friday.
The contractor worked with Aecon, and was working on excavation activities at the time, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
An internal memo obtained by CTV News said the incident happened during a trench excavation.
The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next-of-kin.
Suncor said grief counselling has been made available at the worksite.
Suncor said officials are working with authorities to investigate the incident. Alberta Occupational Health and Safety is investigating.
