Edmonton police said a traffic stop Friday evening for speeding led police to lay dozens of weapons, explosive and drug-related charges against one man.

Police said officers with the Edmonton Police Service Specialized Traffic Apprehension Team (STAT) saw an SUV speeding southbound on Wayne Gretzky Drive on Friday evening.

Officers pulled over the vehicle on Calgary Trail, just south of the Whitemud.

During the stop, officers noticed what appeared to be marijuana sticking out of a backpack that was on the floor of the backseat, officers looked further, and found a loaded handgun, two loaded magazines, 76 rounds of ammunition, two large hunting knives, an axe, and nearly six grams of marijuana.

After further investigation, police discovered an improvised explosive device in the backpack – the EPS bomb detail was dispatched, and detonated the device.

Investigators obtained and executed a search warrant for a home in the area of 45 Avenue and Turner Square – inside, officers seized multiple firearms including two loaded pump-action shotguns, three non-restricted rifles, a loaded restricted rifle, five high capacity and prohibited rifle magazines, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

In the home, police also found another explosive device, which was also dealt with by the bomb detail.

Now, 32-year-old Landon Carstairs is facing a total of 38 drug, firearm and explosive-related charges, with additional charges pending.
