The Edmonton Humane Society is sharing a troubling story of alleged abuse after a two-year-old dog was brought in suffering from a severely fractured leg.

Officials believe Modo, a basset hound beagle cross, was severely beaten by someone with a metal rod in a remote area south of the city.

The animal was brought to shelter by the Humane Animal Rescue Team (HART), a small central Alberta animal rescue organization that relies on foster families to house stray animals.

The Edmonton Humane Society says Modo is on "kennel rest," with hope a splint on his back right back leg will heal broken bones.

It's expected he will be placed for adoption in the coming weeks after his leg is rehabilitated.
