Edmonton fire crews battled several brush fires Sunday afternoon, one that quickly spread to several homes in the city’s west-end.

According to officials, the blaze, first reported in a west-end park, rapidly spread to the rooftops of several homes in the neighbourhood of Oleskiw.

"We had three houses that were damaged [where the fire] got inside [...] two [suffered] extensive damage [and] one just got into the eaves and the attic area," Deputy Chief Scott MacDonald with Edmonton Fire Rescue told CTV News.

"There were spot fires on probably four or five other houses just on the roofs, [those were] extinguished before it got any further," he said.

Many of the homes have roofs made of cedar which added fuel to the fire, CTV’s Michel Boyer reported from the area.

Police also evacuated residents as flames continued to spread.

“All of a sudden, I saw the whole neighbourhood was smoky and I went outside and saw red flames […] our neighbours got their hoses and the whole area was on fire,” said resident Raja Souky.

“The firemen were short-staffed so we just grabbed a hose and [helped] them out,” explained Max Standen.

Edmonton Oilers’ Craig MacTavish and Kelly Buchberger, who live in area, were also on-scene.

According to officials, brush fires located in Edmonton’s Sir Wilfred Laurier Park and in an area near Country Club Road have both been brought under control.

A city-wide and provincial fire ban remains in effect. Officials are asking people to be cautious of the extremely dry conditions.
