Police and the Correctional Service of Canada are investigating, after an inmate serving a sentence for second-degree murder was found unconscious in his cell on Thursday.

Officials said inmate Mehari Wodaje, 46, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Edmonton Institution on Thursday.

Correctional Officers immediately performed CPR, and Wodaje was transported to hospital by paramedics.

He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Wodaje had been serving an indeterminate sentence for a second-degree murder conviction.

His sentence had started on November 5, 2007.

Police and the Medical Examiner have been notified of this death, and Corrections Canada is reviewing the circumstances surrounding his death.
