Officials with the Correctional Service of Canada said a maximum security institution had to be placed under lockdown Friday morning, after an inmate was assaulted.

The Edmonton Institution was locked down at about 9 a.m. Friday, to make way for a search of the facility following the assault of an inmate.

Edmonton Police said police were called to the federal institution at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, where a 22-year-old man was found suffering from stab wounds.

He was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries – he remained in hospital Friday morning.

Due to the lockdown, officials said visits were suspended until the lockdown is lifted.
