The city unveiled the relay route the Olympic torch will take as it is passed through Edmonton on January 13th.

For two hours the Olympic flame, carried by 50 torchbearers, will travel a 14-kilometre route across Edmonton.

The torch will officially begin its trek at Hawrelak Park around 5 p.m., and that's when Edmontonians are invited to cheer on the torch carriers along the main leg of the relay.

Edmontonian Marjorie O' Connor is one of the 50 chosen to carry the torch.

"The thought that I'm carrying the Olympic flame in less than two-and-a-half weeks is fantastic," said O'Connor.

From the park, the torch will then be carried past the University of Alberta main campus, down Whyte Avenue, across the Walterdale Bridge, to the Alberta Legislature, down Jasper Avenue, and will come to a final stop at Churchill Square where local Olympian Doreen Ryan, who competed in speed skating in the 1960 and 1964 Olympics, will light the community cauldron around 7 p.m.

The torch's visit will wrap up with a celebration at Churchill Square where Edmontonians will enjoy some local music provided by rap artist Cadence Weapon, contemporary Aboriginal women's a cappella trio Asani and the ukulele cover band The Be Arthurs.

Edmontonians are encouraged to participate in the celebration by wearing red or decorating their homes and offices in red in part of the Canadian Olympic Committee's 'Paint the Town Red' campaign.

Organizers are hoping more than 20,000 people will line the route to catch a glimpse of the torch. After it leaves Edmonton, the torch will visit several smaller communities in the province before heading off to Red Deer.
