A 57-year-old woman died on Tuesday night after the vehicle she was driving crashed head-on into a semi tractor-trailer unit.

Police responded to the scene on Highway 21 - between Township Road 510 and Township Road 512 - in Strathcona County around 6:15 p.m.

Officers say it appears a Hyundai Tucson was travelling southbound when it crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a northbound semi tractor-trailer unit.

The woman driving the car was fatally injured and pronounced dead on scene.

The 29-year-old driver of the semi tractor-trailer unit was treated on scene for minor injuries.

Police continue to investigate the crash and haven’t yet determined whether drugs, alcohol or speed were factors. They say road conditions and weather do not appear to have played a role.

The name of the deceased is not being released at this time.

Highway 21 between Township Road 510 and Township Road 512 was closed for several hours Tuesday night while police worked to investigate the collision.
