Two young girls are being treated for hypothermia after they fell into the North Saskatchewan River Sunday afternoon.

Officials tell CTV News a 6-year-old and a 9-year-old were playing on an ice bar near the Rundle Park foot bridge when they fell into the water around 4:30 p.m.

Fire crews said a Good Samaritan and his dog jumped in and pulled both girls from the water.

“To me it was very heroic,” District Chief John Bower said.

“If he didn’t do what he did maybe these children might not be around with us.”

Bower added that the 9-year-old was suffering from severe hypothermia but the 6-year-old appeared in good health.

“The 6-year-old was conscious and talking and seemed in good spirits.”

He advised that everyone be cautious during the spring season.

“It’s a very dangerous proposition to be anywhere near a river this time of year.”
