When it comes to naming little Albertans, while top names remain the same, parents continue to get creative every year.
Government officials said 56,529 babies were born in 2015 – 28,816 boys and 27,712 girls.
The most popular names for both boys and girls stayed the same for the third year running – Liam was the most popular name for boys and Olivia was the most popular name for girls.
The top five names for boys in 2015 were Liam, Noah, Ethan, Benjamin, and Lucas.
For girls, the list included Olivia, Emma, Emily, Sophia and Ava.
A full list of the top ten baby names for the last three years can be found below.
Popular culture references remain an inspiration for Alberta parents when choosing names, with some of the more creative names including Tyrion (from Game of Thrones) for boys, and Katniss and Elsa from Hunger Games and Disney’s Frozen for girls, respectively.
According to the province, this year’s list was also inspired by nature and places – unique girl’s names include Winter and Arizona, while some boys were named Skylight and West. Other unique names include Wealth and Crew for boys, and Patience and Mercy for girls.
