Police have arrested a man and will be laying charges against him after he allegedly stabbed a man so severely that the victim's arm was almost severed early Sunday morning.

The incident happened shortly after midnight at a home near 95 Street and 106 A Avenue.

A tenant who lives on the top floor of the home tells CTV News she heard a loud fight going on.

"I heard fighting downstairs from my suite and it was going on quite a long time, but then it seemed to get worse," said Agnes Androkonis.

Androkonis said the tenants living below her had just moved in.

"Somebody came to my door and asked to use the phone, they told me to phone the police and the ambulance," she said.

Police believe there were a few couples involved in a drinking party at the home when a fight broke out. That's when police say a man was stabbed and almost had his arm severed.

Shortly after arriving on scene police seized a meat cleaver that may have been used in the attack.

The 33-year old victim has non-life threatening injures, but will need to have surgery on his arm.

Police tell CTV News they will soon be charging 34-year-old Shea Smith with aggravated assault and possession of an offensive weapon.

Charges are also pending against the victim.
