A central Alberta man who was shot after allegedly stealing an ATV from a rural property last month, says he's sorry.

31-year-old Harold Groening appeared in a Stettler court room Thursday on charges of theft and stolen property.

Groening was allegedly stealing a quad from a Bashaw area home in late march, when police say the owner began chasing him and fired two shots, hitting Groening.

"Honestly if someone was trying to steal something from my property, I'd shoot them too, but yeah it was a pretty terrifying experience," said Groening outside court Thursday.

He says he was taken back to the original scene and was repeatedly punched and hit with a pipe.

"I figure he did what most people would have done, you know, stealing their property and stuff, but there's also other ways to go about it when stuff like that happens," he said.

Another man accused in the incident, 23-year-old Kyle Rosenthal, also appeared in court Thursday. Both men will be back in court next month.

The property owner, 38-year-old Brian Knight, is facing a long list of charges for allegedly taking the law into his own hands.

Knight faces seven firearms and dangerous driving charges.
