Nearly two days after the province started distributing emergency funds to Fort McMurray evacuees in the form of pre-loaded debit cards, officials said thousands of evacuees had received their money.
On Thursday, officials said on Wednesday afternoon, more than $7 million in emergency funds were distributed to 6,000 people.
By late Thursday afternoon, officials said $15,755,005, to 12,191 evacuees.
Also on Thursday, officials opened a second location for evacuees to pick up their funds in Edmonton.
A Tweet sent out Thursday morning from the NAIT Women in Technology and Trades Twitter account said cards would be distributed starting at 2 p.m. Thursday from the NAIT north lobby.
The province confirmed the new location in a news conference Thursday.
The news came after the province launched distribution centres in Lac La Biche, Edmonton and two in Calgary.
At Edmonton’s only distribution centre at the Butterdome, hundreds lined up throughout the afternoon to pick up their cards.
In Lac La Biche, officials processed as many evacuees as they could, before they had to close two hours early.
Officials are distributing cards with $1250 per adult, and $500 per child in emergency funding to all evacuees of the wildfires in the Fort McMurray area.
