The building manager of a downtown apartment building told his story Tuesday, days after he discovered a bloody scene in a suite on New Year's Eve.

Luis Alvarado told CTV News he's still struggling with what he saw when he opened the door of apartment #205 in the apartment complex located on Jasper Avenue and 83 Street Saturday afternoon, and said the scene police described as ‘gruesome', was worse than a horror movie.

He said it all began when a leak was found in a maintenance room below the unit where the body was found.

Alvarado cleaned up the leak, but it continued.

"We'd seen it before, but it was red in colour," Alvarado said. "[It was] really obvious it wasn't just a normal leak."

The building manager said he contacted his manager, and then headed to the second floor apartment to find the source of the leak.

"[I] went up there, [and I knocked], all I could hear was running water and loud music, knock knock again, [my manager] Simon said just enter the unit,

"I opened the door about 5 or 6 inches, and right there was lots of blood on the wall – shoes were scattered around,

"Right there, I closed the door."

Alvarado said he then called police, who arrived within five minutes – and he unlocked the door for them.

"Once I unlocked the unit it was just a bloody mess in there," He said.

Police said 27-year-old Joshua James Houle was arrested that day – he was later charged with second degree murder.

Houle was in court Tuesday morning, and will remain in custody until his next court appearance in January.
