Days after he was defeated by Liberal Leader Raj Sherman in a close race, losing his bid to represent the riding of Edmonton-Meadowlark, former Progressive Conservative candidate Bob Maskell has confirmed he will not seek a recount.

Only 118 votes separated the two candidates after the last polling stations reported results – with Sherman finishing ahead, the riding was one of the last declared – after 11 pm.

Initially, Maskell said he would consider asking for a recount – but on Wednesday, he announced he had decided not to.

"Even if you were 70 [votes] behind that would be, it would be difficult to have that many spoiled ballots," Maskell said. "So I thought: ‘I am not going to do that', I'm just going to graciously say I tried and it didn't happen."

Maskell said he was happy to give his opposition a run for his money – and said he would not run for a seat in the Legislature again.
