Edmonton police have charged a 21-year-old man who they say sexually assaulted a young girl on board a city bus on New Year's Day.

Police say ETS security video surveillance images released following the incident helped them to received a tip about the suspect's whereabouts. 

Abdurahman Dahir Yacin of Edmonton has now been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.

Police reported that on Jan. 1st, they received a call from Edmonton Transit Services reporting the alleged sexual assault. Officials told police shortly after a 12-year-old girl boarded an ETS bus near 59 Street and 118 Avenue, she was approached by a male passenger who allegedly started up a conversation and then proceeded to touch her inappropriately several times.

Investigators learned the suspect first got on the same bus shortly after 9 a.m. at 86 Street and 61 Avenue.

Transit officials said the driver confronted the suspect, but he immediatley got off the bus. Officers were unable to find the suspect directly after that.
