Jasper Place and the 118th Avenue area are two Edmonton neighbourhoods that will be getting a facelift thanks to a $15 million cash injection from the city. The money will be spread between a total of 18 neighbourhoods across the city in 2014.
Both Jasper Place and 118th Avenue have already benefited from the funding from the Great Neighbourhoods Capital Program with new, wider sidewalks, trees, and benches, and Stony Plain Road is slated to see new curbs and gutters and crosswalks between 149th and 158th street. There are also plans to develop more park space.
“This year, the Great Neighbourhoods Capital Program has continued to improve the liveability and vibrancy of Edmonton’s neighbourhoods,” Councillor Andrew Knack said in a written release on Friday. “By creating new share-use pathways, sidewalk connections, streetscaping and improved green spaces, our communities are becoming better connected, safer, more attractive and sustainable.”
Canora, Argyll, Delton, Hazeldean, and Laurier Heights are a few of the other neighbourhoods that will benefit from the funding. New roadways, streetlights, trees, sidewalks and benches and picnic tables will be added in all of these neighbourhoods, based on input from the community.
The Great Neighbourhoods Capital Program is part of a larger city initiative that strives to renew and enhance Edmonton neighbourhoods every year.
