Police believe two drivers involved in a three-vehicle collision at 50th Street and 40th Avenue were speeding excessively when one of them t-boned a car entering the intersection.

Officers say people who saw the crash happen around 9:30 Friday night report the same thing.

"Numerous witnesses said they were driving erratically and appeared to be racing each other," said Cst. Ian Robertson from the scene of the collision.

He confirms alcohol was a factor in the crash, and says one of the alleged street racers fled the scene after the incident. Witness reports indicate the driver's vehicle was silver, though a make is not known at this time.

The driver who was attempting to turn northbound onto 50th Street was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons and was said to be complaining of pain in his neck and back.

Police on scene say street racing is dangerous because other motorists can't gauge speed accurately.

"If they see a couple cars in the distance they might think it's safe to turn, but if those cars are going twice the speed limit they might not know that, so the time they have to complete that turn is greatly reduced," said Cst. Robertson.

"It's very difficult for people to judge speed."

It's not known at this time if the other alleged street racer - the driver of a white BMW – was taken into custody.

As of Saturday afternoon, police had yet to lay charges.
