Edmonton police said charges have been laid against a man for his alleged role in a fatal hit and run involving a motorcycle Monday night.

Police said the crash took place at about 8:15 p.m. Monday – it was reported a 24-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were riding a motorcycle, heading southbound on 122 Street towards Whitemud Drive. The motorcycle had a green light.

Investigators said a vehicle travelling northbound on 122 Street made a left turn at Whitemud, allegedly hitting the motorcycle in the intersection before continuing westbound onto Whitemud Drive.

It’s believed the pair on the motorcycle were thrown from the vehicle, the man, who was driving, sustained non-life threatening injuries, was treated at the scene and was taken to hospital by paramedics. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both were wearing helmets at the time of the collision.

With help from witness reports, officers located a 60-year-old male suspect later on in west Edmonton. The man was arrested without incident.

Charges are pending.
