A young father of three from Alberta is facing a long list of charges for allegedly taking the law into his own hands.

Police say the Bashaw area farmer grabbed a shotgun, followed a thief who stole a quad fro his yard and shot him twice.

Early Thursday morning, a trio of alleged thieves stole a quad from Brian Knight's yard and he then followed the group in his car and police say he rammed the ATV into a ditch.

"We believe the farmer exited his car and discharged two rounds to the suspect with a shotgun," said Sgt. Jim Lank.

Brian Knight spoke to CTV and said he's in a lot of trouble right now and just trying to keep himself busy.

"I know what I did was wrong under the Criminal Code," he said.

And Knight's friend, Vern Ferguson says he would have done the same thing as Brian if he were placed in that situation.

"I don't agree that somebody can come in, take your stuff and you can't do anything about it," said Ferguson.

Ferguson, and several people in the community are starting to put money into a legal fund defence fund for Knight.

Lank says he understands the frustration some people may have, but wants to discourage citizens taking matter into their own hands.

"These are some serious charges that could have ended up in a fatality as well," said Sgt. Lank.

The 38-year-old faces seven firearms and dangerous driving charges.
