Officials with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) have wrapped up their investigation into an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead last December.

That investigation started following an armed robbery at a bank in South Edmonton Common December 11, 2012, police were called to the scene on reports that a man was inside with a gun.

Officers responded, and two entered the bank – told the suspect to put down his weapon, but he refused.

“He was approximately 4 to 6 metres away from the police officers,” ASIRT Executive Director Clifton Purvis said. “They gave him verbal commands to drop the weapon, he refused to comply with those demands.”

ASIRT said both officers fired their guns, hitting the man multiple times – and although he was rushed to hospital, he succumbed to his injuries the next day.

Over the eight-month investigation, a number of witnesses were interviewed, and bank surveillance footage was reviewed – a key piece of evidence in the investigation.

“I found they did not commit any criminal offences in relation to their conduct,” Purvis said.

The man who died in the shooting was later identified as Mike Grisch, 24, his father told CTV News after the shooting that his son couldn’t find a job, and was feeling ‘hopeless’.

His father said he believes Grisch went into the bank with the intention of being shot.
