The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate a police-related incident that has left one man dead.
According to Wetaskiwin RCMP the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday near Ma-Me-O Beach.
An RCMP officer stopped a driver that he believed was impaired.
“The RCMP member was working alone in uniform in a marked police vehicle,” ASIRT director Clif Purvis explained.
“The confrontation occurred with five males who were inside the suspect vehicle.”
Purvis said the officer used his gun after he attempted to arrest one of the men and was confronted by the other four individuals.
Several shots were fired and two men inside the vehicle were shot including a 30-year-old man from Pigeon Lake who died on the scene.
The second man injured, a 41-year-old also from Pigeon Lake, was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.
The three other men were taken into custody.
ASIRT officials said the cruiser was equipped with a camera, which should assist in the investigation.
This follows a police –involved shooting on Thursday near Grande Cache and a Taser incident in Leduc on Friday that left another man dead.
ASIRT is now investigating all three incidents.
Ma-Me-O Beach is about 100 kilometers southwest of Edmonton.
