The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) continues to investigate a police-related incident that has left one man dead.

Leduc RCMP said they responded to a series of calls regarding a 27-year-old man Friday.

Officers believe the man was involved in several assaults, auto thefts, driving complaints and hit and runs.

They located the man at the PetroCan on 50 Street and 50 Avenue in that city.

“In relation to that incident a confrontation occurred between a male and three RCMP officers,” ASIRT director Clif Purvis told media on Sunday.

According to AISRT’s Twitter account the man lost consciousness after being taken into custody near Leduc.

He was taken to an Edmonton hospital but died Sunday.

Purvis confirmed that an energy weapon was used in the altercation.

“At this point we don’t know whether it contributed to the medical condition and subsequent death of this individual,” he added.

An autopsy is expected to be performed later in the week.

Investigators have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or those with video of it to call them, 780-644-1483.
