A day after a man was shot and killed in an incident on the city’s south side, officials with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) released a few more details on what happened.

ASIRT said at about 1:30 p.m., officers received two 911 calls over a possible impaired driver – and officers were dispatched to the area.

An officer in a marked vehicle found the suspect vehicle in southwest Edmonton – and the suspect stopped in a cul-de-sac on Hollands landing NW.

What ASIRT described as ‘an encounter’ took place, between the officer and the driver, identified only as a 55-year-old man. ASIRT said the officer discharged his firearm, and injured the man.

ASIRT said the officer and others tried to provide first aid to the man until paramedics arrived – but despite all efforts to save his life, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with ASIRT were called in, and said a large hunting knife was found near the deceased and seized.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.

ASIRT’s investigation will focus on the circumstances surrounding the encounter that resulted in the officer discharging his firearm.
