RCMP west of Edmonton said a collision between a car and a gravel truck Wednesday morning left one person with critical injuries.

At about 9:30 Wednesday morning, officers were called to a collision on Highway 16 near Highway 60.

Investigators found a car had been travelling westbound on Highway 16 when it pulled off the highway onto an emergency vehicle turn around point on the median. The car then entered the eastbound lanes of the highway without yielding to traffic headed in that direction.

As a result, the car collided with the gravel truck heading eastbound.

The driver, and lone occupant of the car, was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton. At last word, he was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the gravel truck wasn’t hurt.

Investigators said drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.
