Edmonton police said Tuesday that officers were investigating a collision between a bus and a pedestrian, a young girl, in the city’s southwest.

Police said officers were called to Rutherford Road and 16A Avenue just after 8 a.m. Tuesday.

According to police, the 11-year-old girl had tried to board the bus through the front passenger door, while the bus driver was reportedly trying to pull away from the bus stop.

The girl got caught in the door, officers said, before she was allegedly dragged a short distance as it headed northbound on Rutherford Road.

It’s believed the girl got herself out of the door, but her leg was run over by the bus.

The girl was taken to hospital by paramedics in what appeared to be serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police are investigating – and said it wasn’t clear if charges would be laid.

Edmonton Transit released a statement later Tuesday in response to the incident:

“We are deeply sorry to learn of the injury to this young child, and will ensure this incident is looked into in a thorough and comprehensive manner,” ETS Branch Manager Charles Stolte said in the statement.

ETS said officials were working with police on the incident. ETS said the driver involved would not be behind the wheel during th einvestigation, and he has been offered counselling.
