Several Edmonton families have lost their homes after a blaze in Lewis Estates Sunday afternoon.

Fire fighters responded to 213 Street and 88 Avenue around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

“From the moment we came on scene and set up our fire curtains it was controlled,” District fire chief Lorne Corbett explained.

He said there were at least three houses that were destroyed and several others damaged.

Corbett added there were no injuries reported and crews managed to rescue a dog from one of the homes.

“Our firefighters went in and they located that dog. They returned it to the owners and the dog is okay.”

One of the homeowners, Mark Planche, said he was happy to have made it out.

“I was sitting on my bed on Facebook just chilling out and I heard someone scream ‘Hey your house is on fire'.”

Planche said at that point, he hurried out of the house.

Eyewitnesses told CTV News the flames spread quickly from house to house.

“I thought it was going to devour the whole neighbourhood. It was that bad and that fast,” Jen Coutre said.

“Basically the entire upper side of my house is scorched but no interior damage I think,” Planche said.

“I won’t know until they let me back in.

“I don’t know where my cat is but he’s independent he’ll figure it out himself,” he added.

Fire fighters said they were lucky that weather conditions didn’t complicate the situation.

“If this was a high kilometre wind this most definitely would have involved a few more houses to the east.”
