It’s a day for Albertans to honour families, and there are a variety of different events for Edmontonians to celebrate Family Day.

Here’s a list of some of the events open to families on Family Day, Monday, February 16:

  • Family Day Unplugged: An initiative from the City of Edmonton to encourage residents to take a break from technology and spend quality time with their families.
  • City Hall and Churchill Square: Skating on the ice rink, go for a hayride, roast bannock over an open fire and participate in games and activities in Churchill Square. Free skate and helmet rentals are available, and food trucks will be on site. Inside City Hall there will be live entertainment, crafts and more.
  • Edmonton Valley Zoo (13315 Buena Vista Road): Family Day activities from noon to 4 p.m. Participate in an animal families scavenger hunt and visit the polar bear craft table. Face painting, and hands-on science experiment table. Hot chocolate and a photo booth also available. (Regular admission rates apply)
  • Reuse Centre (6835 83 Street): Activities from noon to 4 p.m. Open house – families can participate in a reuse crafting workshop, shop through the treasure trove of items, take a tour, and learn about reuse. Cost: Free ($5 for purchases of up to 50 kg).
  • Royal Alberta Museum (12845 102 Avenue):  Free admission.
  • Government House (12845 102 Avenue): Free public tours (starting Sunday, February 15, and every Sunday and holiday Monday until November) between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Provincial Archives of Alberta (8555 Roper Road): Annual Family History Day between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. with guided, behind the scenes tours and introductory workshops on genealogy. Activities free, but pre-registration is required: e-mail or call 780-427-1750.
  • Alberta Legislature: Indoor and outdoor activities between noon and 4 p.m. Pedway will feature roving musicians, an illusionist, stage performances and magic shows. Participate in a scavenger hunt inside the Legislature, or try to build the ‘Legoslature’ – make your own version of the legislature using Lego. Head to the ‘Cabane à sucre’ where you can make and eat maple candies on clean snow. Horse-drawn carriage and ice skating also available.
