A local state of emergency has been declared in southern Alberta, while a massive grass fire west of Lethbridge continues to burn.
The blaze reportedly started Monday morning, west of Highway 509 – fire crews from Lethbridge, Lethbridge County and the Blood Reserve have been attempting to contain the blaze since then.
Smoke has also been drifting across the reserve into parts of west Lethbridge – prompting a warning to the public to stay away from the area, and keep roads clear for emergency crews.
Emergency officials said the smoke can reduce visibility, and create hazardous road conditions.
A number of streets in the city have been closed to prevent traffic congestion.
Anyone in the area who is sensitive to smoke is asked to stay indoors, and keep their windows closed.
So far, residents in a number of communities, including Mountain Meadows, Sunset Acres and Township 8-22, and Coalhurst are being advised to evacuate immediately.
The Canadian Red Cross has opened three evacuation centres in the area:
- Fritz Sick Memorial Gym - 420 11 St. S. Lethbridge
- Enmax - 2510 Scenic Drive
- Picture Butte Community Centre - Main Street, Picture Butte
