It’s a major project that has faced its share of delays, and City of Edmonton officials said the official handover of the NAIT LRT Line been pushed back again.

Now, City of Edmonton officials say the line would not be handed over to the city by December 31, as previously stated.

Wayne Mandryk, LRT Design and Construction Manager, said Tuesday that the contractor Thalus Canada was having issues getting their software to combine with existing traffic control software.

“It is a software issue, in terms of the computers talking to each other,” Mandryk said.

“They may have underestimated the complexity of trying to integrate that and that may have contributed to the delay we’re seeing now.”

Mandryk admitted he was frustrated by the development.

The original handover date for the line was Spring, 2014, but it was postponed twice.

“We still anticipate an opening in 2015, but at this time I can’t give you an exact date until we get more infomration from Thalus,” Mandryk said.

Students at NAIT have been waiting for the line to open.

“We’re still hopeful it’s going to be there in February, even though they have said it’s going to be delayed a little bit,” Hasib Baig with the NAIT Students’ Association said.

Once the line is handed over to the City, officials said it will need four to six weeks to train city staff before it can open.
