Edmonton police said the Homicide Unit had taken over the investigation into a suspicious death on the north side.
Officers were called to an alley in the area of 118 Avenue and 64 Street on Thursday, at about 1:25 a.m. Reports indicated a man had been found injured, and witnesses reported hearing gun fire.
Police and paramedics arrived on the scene, and officers found a number of possible witnesses nearby, the area was cordoned off while officers went door-to-door to find more witnesses.
The man was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital, he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Investigators are still interviewing witnesses, and officers are combing through evidence at the scene.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday, December 4.
