An already heated issue is flaring up again after documents related to a new transgender policy for Edmonton Catholic Schools were leaked on Thursday.

The documents indicate Catholic schools should support inclusivity, but they also say gender transitioning goes against Catholic beliefs.

The document drafted by the Council of Catholic Superintendents of Alberta says: “To attempt ‘gender transitioning’ is contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church.”

The leak comes as trustees work to draft a policy of inclusion for transgender students.

The documents were leaked by Trustee Patricia Grell, who has been outspoken on transgender rights.

“I didn't realize it was confidential. No one said to me it was confidential,” said Grell. “It's a policy put forward by the Council of Catholic Superintendents of Alberta, so I think that's where the controversy is.”

Board Chair Deb Engel said the document is not binding, but is meant to help guide schools boards to develop policy.

Engel said she’s frustrated by how the issue is being handled by Grell.

“There's so many things that spin out of control, when we don't speak with one unified voice from board policy,” said Debbie Engel, chair of Edmonton Catholic Schools. “It's pretty sad for the rest of us and for our staff that are doing the job and then hearing that they're not on social media.”

Dr. Kristopher Wells with the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies at the University of Alberta took to Twitter Thursday evening to voice concerns over the leaked documents.
