RCMP are crediting the quick thinking of a northern Alberta man, after his vehicle struck a moose on the highway – but the driver only suffered minor injuries.

Police said it all unfolded Tuesday, December 17 at about 6 a.m. when Kevin McFadgen was driving to work in Peace River, from North Star, Alberta on Highway 35.

About 20 kilometres south of Manning, police said a northbound semi-truck passed him, creating a temporary white-out situation.

RCMP said McFadgen slowed his vehicle down, then saw a moose standing in his lane at the last second – without time to swerve and avoid the animal, the driver ducked below the dash into the passenger seat just as his vehicle hit the moose.

The animal was flipped onto the hood of the car, and peeled the roof back.

McFadgen managed to get out of the vehicle himself and call for help – he was taken to hospital with only minor injuries.

The moose didn’t survive the crash.
