Edmonton's first baby of the New Year was born at the Misericordia hospital Sunday morning.

Alyza Venice Badival, arrived at 12:04 a.m., weighing in at six pounds and five ounces.

It's the first baby for parents Zendell and Alistair Badival.

The couple said despite contractions they put off going to the hospital until later in the day on Saturday.

"Around eight in the morning I started to feel contractions," Zendell told CTV News.

"Around four o'clock or four-thirty we decided to go to hospital."

The couple said they were cautious about being sent home with a false labour as Zendell was not due until January 16.

"We didn't expect it was going to be a New Year's Eve baby," Alistair explained.

As it grew closer to midnight the couple said they were started to get excited.

"We were actually looking at the clock," Zendell smiled.

Despite being allergic to pain killers Zendell said she feels okay.

"I don't have any pain relievers," she said.

"Any pain reliever I will have a reaction."

The couple said they knew it was going to be a girl and had already decided on a name.

"We decided to have a combination of our names," Zendell explained.

They said they have been together for two years and married last October.
