City officials are taking a look at upgrading the city’s parking meters – introducing new technology that would allow drivers to use other means than change to pay for parking.

Officials said old meters will need to be replaced in the future – so they’re looking to other cities that have adopted new systems, such as in Calgary and Winnipeg, where meters accept credit cards, and have for some time.

However the city said it’s considering taking the upgrade a step further.

“We’re moving forward with making it better for people,” Bob Dunford with the City of Edmonton said. “Using smartphone technology is what people are looking for.”

The city’s transportation department is reviewing its parking management strategy, and it’s believed new meters could be installed without driving up costs.

“I think [it is] good all-around, I mean people are wanting more options,” Dunford said.

The existing meters are not due for replacement until 2015.

A progress report will be presented to city councillors next week.
