The Edmonton Oilers have locked in a former first-overall draft pick to remain as part of the team for another seven years.

On Thursday, Oilers General Manager Craig MacTavish announced that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 20, had signed a contract extension to keep playing with the Oilers for another 7 years.

The $42 million contract extension comes as the first-round pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft entered the final year of his entry-level deal.

Nugent-Hopkins hails from Burnaby, B.C. – last year, the centre had four goals and 20 assists in 40 games with the Oilers.

Over 102 career NHL games, the 6’ 1”, 185 lb. player has registered 22 goals, and 54 assists.
