A three-alarm blaze has damaged all 106 units in a Clareview condo and displaced over 100 residents.
The blaze, which is still under investigation, began on a fourth floor balcony at 301 Clarview Station Drive Friday around 5:30 p.m. and officials said about 14 units and 60 firefighters had been called to the scene.
“It had already gotten into the roof system so that becomes a very hard fire to fight at that point. But they did a fantastic job at stopping the fire loss itself,” Captain Kevin Bureau said.
“Just the roof and the fourth-floor is the part that is burnt the most.”
Officials have estimated the damage to be about $16.3 million.
“There is extensive water and smoke damage throughout the entire building,” Bureau explained.
“They are going to be rebuilding.”
Two fire fighters were treated for smoke inhalation but all the residents managed to escape unharmed.
Crews were able to get the fire contained by 10 p.m. but it was still considered a working fire as they dealt with some hot spots.
Fire officials said they have been searching for residents of 28 suites as they were missing contact information for them.
Displayed residents were put up by the Canadian Red Cross, who said they will be offering emergency food, clothing and accommodation for the next 72 hours.
Volunteers will be at the Clareview Recreation centre from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday to meet with residents who need help. Anyone needing help can also contact the organization, 1-888-800-6493.
Edmonton Emergency Relief has put out a call for new pillows, underwear, toiletries, bedding and clean water.
Items can be dropped off at their warehouse, 10255-104 Street between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.
