Edmonton police are investigating a fatal collision that forced a number of drivers heading into the city to detour throughout Friday morning.

Police said officers were called to the scene of the collision, on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, just north of Gateway Park, at about 4:40 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found a deceased man in the northbound lanes of the highway.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours – police said they reopened to traffic at about 41 Avenue just after 8:30 a.m.

At about 11 a.m., police said an ambulance and a pedestrian were involved in the crash – investigators said the ambulance had a patient on board at the time, but it was travelling at normal highway speed, and did not have lights or sirens on at the time.

Initial investigations indicated the 67-year-old man was trying to cross the highway at the time of the crash.

Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors.

At the time of the crash, traffic flow in the area was described as ‘light’, and police are seeking witnesses to the crash, and want to hear from anyone who may have seen the crash, or somebody walking on or near the highway at about 4:30 a.m.

EPS confirmed the deceased is an adult male, and police were notifying next-of-kin.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or #377 on a mobile phone. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
