More than a week after a U of A student was attacked in an incident EPS’ Hate Crimes unit is investigating, an organization that promotes marriage, gender and human equality hosted a rally in our city.

On July 19, Edmonton police were called to the area of 110 Street and 83 Avenue, after witnesses reported a robbery had taken place.

The victim of the alleged robbery, Chevi Rabbit, 26, spoke with CTV News saying he had been walking in the area alone at the time.

Rabbit, who said he has been openly gay since he was a child, said three men in a car had started shouting homophobic slurs at him – as they had done previously only days before.

This time, however, Rabbit alleged one of the men got out of the car. Rabbit said the suspect grabbed him from behind in a headlock and then threw him to the ground.

NOH8 Edmonton says it is holding the march and rally to show support for equality and safety in Edmonton.

Participants are encouraged to wear purple.

NOH8 Edmonton posted on its Facebook page the march will start at 6 p.m. at the scene of the alleged attack, in the area of 110 Street and 84 Avenue.

The organization adds the march will continue through the university grounds, and end at the Alberta Legislature grounds at 7 p.m. where a number of speakers are slated to appear, including several politicians.
