Police east of Edmonton are investigating after a highway collision left one person dead Wednesday morning.

Strathcona County RCMP said the crash took place at 10:37 a.m. on Highway 21, south of Township Road 522.

Investigators said an SUV towing a small utility trailer was headed southbound on Highway 21, when it’s alleged the driver lost control, crossed the centre line and hit a smaller car that was heading north.

RCMP said the driver of the SUV, an 18-year-old male, was taken by ground ambulance to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His male passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The 50-year-old woman behind the wheel of the car was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of the crash, the highway was shut down for several hours Wednesday – officials said the roadway was expected to completely reopen by 6 p.m.
