Tofield RCMP are investigating, after a serious highway crash involving an ambulance carrying a patient forced STARS to complete the patient transfer.

Police were called to the crash on Highway 14, about 10 kilometres west of Tofield, at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

It’s believed the ambulance had been heading westbound on the highway, transporting a patient in serious condition to Edmonton, when a cube van travelling in the same direction didn’t pull over for it.

Investigators said the van made a left turn, across the path of the ambulance, and the two vehicles collided.

STARS was dispatched and took over the patient transfer, airlifting the patient to the U of A Hospital.

One passenger was taken by another ground ambulance to a local hospital with non-serious injuries.

No one else was hurt in the crash.

RCMP said charges are pending.
