On Thursday, the wait ended to find out which city would host the Canada Winter Games in 2019 – with Red Deer being chosen.

The Canada Games Council made the announcement in Calgary Thursday morning.

The Canada Games is the world’s largest multi-sport event, held every two years.

It’s expected the event in 2019 will attract more than 1,800 athletes from across Canada to compete in 19 sports ranging from synchronized swimming, to alpine skiing.

Red Deer and Lethbridge were the two communities who entered a bid for the 2019 games.

The decision was made following a bidding process and technical review – Red Deer’s final bid proposal was submitted in June, and the evaluation committee headed to the city for a site visit on August 22, when thousands of Red Deer residents took part in a rally to show their support for the Canada Games bid.
