For convenience store manager Joe Dam, throwing money around is not only a good way to spend the day -- it's just smart business.

Dam has become known throughout the Riverbend neighbourhood as the friendly store manager who throws his customer's change -- or anything else catchable -- to people from metres away.

Dam runs the River Mart Convenience Store at 149 Street and 45 Avenue.

"Three packs yah, three you catch it," he said as he lobbed three packs of cigarettes at a waiting customer. "There you go."

His unique way of doing business has caught the eye of local media and grabbed the hearts of his customers.

Jessica Maidment said Dam's unique way of doing business is what keeps her coming back.

"They're friendly, nobody else does that," she said.

Dam is no stranger to change. As a Chinese refugee from Vietnam, he moved to Edmonton 30 years ago in search of a better life.

Dam said he first got the idea to chuck his customer's change after he moved to Canada.

"I just picked up my talent in here, in Vietnam I just do business," he said.

New customer Melanie Goguen said Dam's tricks make his store memorable.

"It's the first time I've ever seen something like that's and I find it's pretty cool," she said.
