A St. Albert couple is celebrating the safe arrival of their second child who was unexpectedly delivered on the bathroom floor of their home.

At about 5 a.m. on February 1, Lindsay Muzichuk and her husband Darrell quickly realized they wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time.

“I was trying to get my shoes on, get [my] jacket on and trying to get to the car at least,” Lindsay recalled.

According the couple, contractions came on so quickly that within minutes Lindsay could no longer stand.

“We laid [her] on the floor. By the time we got her on the floor, the head was out,” Darrell said.

“Within a few pushes, I think just three pushes, she was out,” he added.

With the help of Darrell and a 911 operator, Ava Rose was born on the bathroom floor, weighing a healthy 8 pounds 15 ounces.

“She started crying right away, which was just a huge relief because so many things could have gone wrong,” said Darell.

A team of eight first responders rushed to the scene within five minutes in what was considered a rare but serious emergency.

“Given the nature of the call, ya we fly,” said St. Albert firefighter Lee Monfette who was first to hold the newborn.

“As soon as you walk in and hear the baby crying, it’s a relief,” he added.

According to Lindsay, the impromptu delivery room quickly became crowded.

“There probably was at least four [people] in the bathroom with me. At that point Darrell had to leave because there was no space,” she said.

The entire ordeal lasted only about 30 minutes - both mom and baby are doing well.
