Police east of Edmonton are investigating, after a serious collision left two men in hospital Monday afternoon.

Strathcona County RCMP said just before 7 p.m. Monday, officers and the Strathcona County Emergency Services were called to the crash at Millennium Place in Sherwood Park.

RCMP said a mini-van taxi, driven by a 42-year-old Edmonton man, was headed north in the east-side parking lot at Millennium Place.

Police said the taxi hit an SUV in the parking lot, and then apparently gained speed before crashing through the southeast entrance to Millennium Place – continuing through into the lobby where it hit a 41-year-old man.

Police said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash – it’s believed the taxi driver may have suffered a medical incident ahead of the crash.

The man in the lobby and the driver of the taxi were both taken to hospital with serious injuries, the female driver of the SUV that was struck in the parking lot was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP were expected to remain on the scene for several hours.

Significant damage was done to the entrance where the van crashed, although the facility remained open, as only access to the gym was cut off by the crash.
