Edmonton police said one suspect was in custody after noon Friday, following an hours-long search of the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Officers from Edmonton and members of the RCMP responded to the EPCOR facility at 10977 50 Street, early Friday morning.

The search ended up at the facility after RCMP in Sherwood Park pursued a truck, around 4:00 a.m., before it ended up in the North Saskatchewan River near the water treatment plant.

Police then spent several hours searching the facility.

“It’s a rather painstaking process to go through this particular facility,” Scott Pattison with the Edmonton Police Service said. “There are thousands of little rabbit holes where somebody could hide and tunnels that connect the buildings. So, it’s a bit of a logistical nightmare.”

Later, police said the suspect had been found in a building in the southwest corner of the facility, and was in the duct work at the time.

Workers at the plant were told to stay away during the search. No injuries were reported.

It’s expected the suspect will face a number of charges.
